Effect of Vasectomy on the Testicular Ultrastructure of Rat

|
The fine structure of the rat was studied at intervals of up to ten months after bilateral vasectomy. Controls were bilaterally sham operated. Objective was to determine whether the fine structure of the testis is altered as a result of vasectomy. Attention was directed toward the ultrastiucture of seminiferous epithelium. Focal alterations in the restricted region were detected, but this fact didn´t prove the effect of vasectomy on the testis. Sperm granulomas developed in all the vasectomized rats. Factors are discussed which may qualify this conclusion, the structural complexity of developing germ cells, the multiplicity of stages in the cycle of the seminiferous epithelium, and development of sperm granulomas.
